Preschool math that is fun and engaging. Movement, song, and play based. Children should love learning the basics of math so they can carry on loving math for life.

I’m a former teacher turned homeschool mom. I am writing this preschool math curriculum for my own three-year-old after I could not find anything appropriate for her age. I would love it if you would join us. It is free and uses everyday household objects, so there is nothing to purchase, unless you don’t have washable paints. It is designed for 36 weeks of movement, play, singing and fun for our youngest learners ages 3 to 4.
Preschool age children learn best through play and math should be first taught orally with tangible, real objects. We want our children to be able to request 3 pretzels or 7 slices of orange. This is not done through worksheets, sitting at desks or memorizing the numbers, but through touching real objects as they count and learn.
Preschool Math Goals
The first goal for this preschool math curriculum is for children to be able to count from 1 to 20 with one-to-one correspondence. This means they are able to count real objects and not just recite the numbers. When they are first learning, they should be touching each object as they count it or using their fingers to count.
By the end of this year, children should also be able to count backwards from 10 to 1 with one-to-one correspondence. Children need to understand that counting goes in both directions and that 7 crackers become 6 crackers if you eat one. This is about understanding the HOW of numbers and that they represent real things.

As part of preschool math, children will grow their vocabulary and understanding of measurement values. Preschool is the perfect time for children to learn tall, taller, short, shorter, long, longer, middle, full, empty, half, heavy and light through real world applications. These terms will form the foundation for later learning about measurements and provide children vocabulary for comparing objects.
The last goal for this preschool curriculum is knowing the basic shapes. Children should be able to identify circles, triangles, squares, rectangles, hearts and diamonds by the end of the year. This is the first step in learning geometry.
Math is for Every Child
This math curriculum is for children who are not counting at all and for those who are already counting to 12 and need to solidify their counting. It is adaptable and fun, so even children who know some of this information will be engaged by the songs and games. It is also for children who can’t sit still, have speech delays or other special needs.
We will be spending roughly 15 minutes twice a week singing songs and nursery rhymes, playing simple games and learning math along the way. Every other week a simple project will further children’s understanding of math concepts. These projects are designed to last 20 to 30 minutes but will need a bit of preparation and clean up afterwards.
This curriculum will be posted one month at a time starting in August. I would welcome any feedback or opinions along the way because after this 2026-2027 school year, I will be pulling this curriculum from my blog and turning it into a full year long curriculum available for purchase.
Please join us in our preschool math learning this year. We would love to have you.
